Passport to Liberty: The People and Ideas That Make America Great
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Mm) (July, 1992)
Author: Jan Sammer
Average review score:

How the American Revolution has changed the world
This charming little book helps remind us just how revolutionary the American idea of liberty and government by the people was when first proposed in the Eighteenth century... and how revolutionary it continues to be in certain parts of the world even today. Reading these excerpts, the one feels as if each of the witnesses called upon to testify spoke to the reader directly from his or her portrait on the opposite page. My favorite passage is from Thomas Paine: "From a small spark kindled in America a flame has arisen not to be extinguished. Man finds himself transformed, he scarcely perceives how." The American idea has truly transformed the world more than we often realize.

An essential American handbook for our times
This handy little book presents several essential American documents which deserve to be read and re-read these days, such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Emancipation Proclamation. But the most interesting texts are the carefully chosen comments about political freedom and the American project from a variety of historical figures ranging from Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson to Martin Luther King and JFK--the quality and clarity of their writing and thinking is startling to modern ears. This little blue book is the "Little Red Book" for Americans and students of America.

I liked it because it was a mystery and an adventure and those topics are really fun to read about. I couldn't wait to pick up the book again and read it all over. I

Wonderful story!
If you enjoyed Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys, this story is for you. It took me back to my childhood and my kids love it, too.

Right and Wrong of Compulsion by the State and Other Essays
Published in Paperback by Liberty Fund, Inc. (October, 1978)
Authors: Auberon Herbert and Eric Mack

A Gospel for Freedom
This book of essays had an effect upon me similar to that of the New Testament. It changed my outlook forever. (By the way, a total change of outlook is the actual meaning of the word 'repent'.)

Beautiful Work
This volume is an essential collection of the profound works of Auberon Herbert, the fountainhead of "voluntaryism." Herbert took Herbert Spencer's famous law of equal freedom, and extended it to its full extent. As a result, Herbert concluded, as Ayn Rand, Murray Rothbard, et al, have since, that physical force is evil, and that the only legitimate, or at least, acceptable use of force is in defense. Moreover, Herbert concluded that it was illegitimate for *anyone* to utilize force, even government agents. Therefore, all forms of government intervention beyond the basic protection of individual rights is both illegitimate and immoral, including taxation. In fact, he even offers a 29 point case against all taxation in one particular piece. In place of coercive government, Herbert proposed defensive services financed voluntarily, and indeed, this is the only moral method. Throughout the work, one is consistently delighted by Herbert's firm and eloquent advocacy of individualism, rationality, responsibility, and progress. Admirers of Ayn Rand and Objectivism should especially enjoy this work. Above all, Herbert's writings are delightful and often deeply moving pieces of work, and I can only hope that friends of liberty and reason become more acquanted with them in the future.

The Second Coming of Age: Liberty and Justice

Quest of Spirituality
Reading of Johnny Thumper toil with his own thoughts & feelings of life was delightful & insiteful. Spirituality seems to be lost in today's society. Reading of one man's quest for this purpose on earth makes one think of their own spirituality. If only more people actually wanted to make a difference in the world like the semi-fictional Johnny.
Congrats to such a talented author.

An American Tale!
This book is an American epic, written toward Aesop's predictions, Hemingway's poetry, esoteric dimensions. An American Gao Xingjian.

Self-Ownership, Freedom, and Equality

Cohen does it again
Cohen does it again. In a work that defies brief summary, Prof. Cohen's arguments have sound logic, are truly provocative, and have profound normative implications. Few political theorists, especially if marxist, have such an admirable combination of analytical power and deep respect for the integrity of normative theory. Political philosophy at its best.

Social Choice and Individual Values
Published in Paperback by Yale Univ Pr (October, 1970)
Author: Kenneth J. Arrow
Average review score:

Great book, but probably not the same one Garrett read
I usually only write reviews here about inexpensive math textbooks, but when I saw the other review, I had to add my two cents. This book is a great work of scholarship about the theory of voting and social choice, fields which this book(in its original form as Arrow's PhD thesis created). It is a totally theoretical work, which does not espouse anything about how one should live, contrary to what the other reviewer says. Very certainly, it says nothing about conformity. In a certain very tenuous sense, one could say that the conclusions favor the individual over society, but the work makes no value judgements that kind.

The theory of social choice is concerned with the logical problem of defining what it would mean to say that 'society prefers x to y'. More concretely, given a set of abstract individuals, each with their own set of values, how can we put these individual values together to determine what "society" wants. In particular, this theory clearly has relevance to voting, but it is abstract and has wider relevance as well. Arrow shows in this work that a few very reasonable assumptions about how these social values should behave in relation to the individual values are in fact contradictory(provided one has more than three people in the population-with two good old democracy works perfectly), forcing one to conclude that perhaps the concept of social choice is meaningless.

So he proves that an informal concept of social choice is contradictory, but that doesn't mean that if one takes weaker axioms, you can't get a consistent concept, and he studies this question, a topic of much further research, in the later chapters.

One thing to note is that Arrow's original proof was in fact fallacious, but in this book he provides a fix.

So, it can be tempting to read this work as being opposed to the idea that a society itself can have values, and thus individualism is all, but this was not at all the spirit in which the book was written, which is the spirit of mathematics(though no mathematics is used) and of welfare economics(which is not about welfare in the sense of a government giving money to the poor).

A brilliant attack on sycophancy in support of individuality
This book espouses intransigent individuality while refuting blind conformity to societal norms.. . .A great work!

The STATUE OF LIBERTY ENCYCLOPEDIA
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (October, 2000)
Author: Barry Moreno
Average review score:

Best Liberty Book since 1986!
Finally, a book worth having! There were a lot of books published between 1984 and 1986 for the statue's centennial and only a few were worth having. This newly published book is a must have for the Statue of Liberty collector, historian, or proud American.

"The Statue of Encyclopedia, serves as the first ever top-to-bottom reference on one of the most beloved national monuments. Barry Moreno, the premier expert and historian of the Statue of Liberty, leads readers on a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated A-to-Z tour. Featuring an abundance of little-known but fascinating aspects and curiosities about her history, the book also includes a vast collection of photographs - many never before published."

Every American should own this.
Whether you're political, or artistic, every American should own this book. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? An intangible concept that is broken down into encyclopedia form for scholars and us regular folks to digest. There are dozens of books about the Statue, but I found this one is by far the most comprehensive and the pictures are of outstanding quality. Highly recommended.

Do not miss this book!
My brother sent this cookbook to us during the holidays. The only problem with it is trying to get it away from my husband who reads the background of each immigrant group coming through Ellis Island while I'm trying to make the recipes!

I had the occasion to have a young man visit here during the holidays, he and I decided to make the Latkes (best ever). As he left, he hugged me in thanks for "bringing him back to his heritage." I have ordered the cookbook for him to share with his uncle who came through Ellis Island.

This is not only a great cookbook but a great reminder of what our families lived through coming to America.

taste of liberty-a celebration of our great ethnic cooking
This is truly a lovely book, and its price is great considering it is a hardback. The pictures are great and it provides a great prologue that preceedes each chapter regarding the history of each respective immigrant group-Polish,Greek,Jewish,English,and Hungarian are all included.everyone will find something delicious in this book...though it might not be the kidney pie!

Traveling Light: Modern Meditations on St. Paul's Letter of Freedom
Published in Paperback by Helmers & Howard Pub (March, 1989)
Author: Eugene H., Peterson
Average review score:

Legalism's voice is silenced in your life w/this reading.
Mr. Peterson is so great at modernizing the words of Paul. As a result of reading this book, it would be difficult to misunderstand the truth intended in Paul's letter to the Galatians throughout the centuries. These pages exemplify freedom upon freedom. Truly, I believe Mr. Peterson is one of the best Christian authors of our time.

Refreshing and relevant commentary of freedom in Galatians.
Peterson develops his devotional commentary around the relevant central theme in Galatians of FREEDOM. Contains simple and powerful insights to aid any who feel pressured to conform to external religious standards in order to find acceptance with God or the religious community. Peterson delivers with conviction and passion. Full of excellent illustrations and applications. An aid both to understanding each passage and flow of this Bible book (notable are his well thought out chapter divisions and contemporary textual paraphrase), but also grasping and applying its central theme. Very readable.

My copy is well worn for my frequent return trips. Buy it! You won't be disappointed.
